The New Penny
The penny has had a makeover! The US Mint is introducing 4 new penny designs in honor of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. This is the first time the penny has been altered in 50 years!
Lincoln's profile will remain the same on one side and the other side will feature the new images. The first of the 4 new coins will be released into circulation on February 12th, which is Lincoln's birthday. A different penny with the 3 other images will be introduced every 3 months, from February. The different images will be a log cabin, a young Lincoln reading a book, Lincoln as a young lawyer in Springfield, IL, and a half-completed Capitol dome.
David Brooks
We had the pleasure of attending a talk by David Brooks this week. His insights into our society, economy, and most importantly, the upcoming Presidential election were both thought provoking and great discussion-starters. It's people like David who foster the most important conversations and truly solicit change on an organic level. We strongly recommend for you to check out 1 or a few of his books/articles, including Bobos in Paradise, which digs into our social class structure using humor, wit, and sophistication. Let us know if you have any books to recommend to our network by posting under "comments" and have a great weekend*

12 Athletes Leaving Brains to Concussion Study
A dozen athletes, including 6 NFL players and a former U.S. women's soccer player, have agreed to donate their brains after their deaths to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy. The former New England Patriots linebacker, Ted Johnson, is one of the players who has agreed to donate his brain. Johnson hopes that the center will clarify the issue of concussions' long-term effects, which have been tied to cognitive impairment and depression in several published studies. Johnson has dealt with degenerative problems with memory and depression, which are due to the multiple concussions he faced from 2002-2005. The NFL is conducting its own study to see if there are any long-term effects of concussions in NFL athletes.
The findings of this study have the ability to change contact sports forever!

PET CUSTODY*
One of the Today Show's latest segments featured a story on PET CUSTODY BATTLES...an issue we feel passionate about for a number of reasons:
1) We are animal lovers, thus understanding the importance of this issue. Sophie, Max, and Bailey are just as important as children, cars, and homes.
2) Why should the judge decide? It's harder to prove in court that one owner is "more attached" or "loved more" to/by a pet. This validates one of the news anchor's suggestions: SIGN A PRE-PUP...it might be helpful down the road, and if not, well a piece of paper isn't hurting anybody!
3) Dogs, cats, and other pets are a new form of "Ex-cessories" we haven't given much thought to until now! No, we're not going to be buying & selling people's loved ones on the website, however it's an important point to bring attention to in the relationship sphere.
What are your thoughts on this important issue? Check out the story on the Today Show website at http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26771730/ and post your thoughts under "comments"!

Trash: AnyColorYouLike
Trash: AnyColorYouLike is Adrian Kondratowicz's new project making a statement on mass consumption. The idea behind this project is to beautify garbage by using vibrant colored bags, causing people to realize how much trash they produce. The garbage bags are hot pink with gold or white polka dots, are made of 100% biodegradable PVC, are scented with peppermint bubble gum, and repel insects and vermin!
You can purchase 1 for $10, fill it with air, and then display it outside your home, explaining to people that it is not only art but a movement. Or you can buy a box for $30 and jazz up your garbage, while making an important statement. The goal: "a vivid citywide art intervention." For additional information and tips on how to get involved, please visit anycoloryoulike.biz.

Take a Load Off
One good thing that came from Gustav was the time and lack of cable access to rent/watch an entire television series...LIFE. The show follows Detective Charlie Cruz, who was wrongly convicted and imprisoned for a murder he did not commit. Now, after winning a large settlement from the city, Cruz is back in action, solving civilian crimes in addition to snooping for new evidence from his own case. Think Law & Order/CSI with the added twist of Cruz's personal life taking a secondary focal point. The series is a must see....hurry before Season 2 begins on 9/29 on NBC!

Fashionable Protection
Rumor has it that famous designers Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney are teaming up with PETA to design cruelty free guards uniforms for the Queen! When visiting London, checking out the Queen's guards is a must and they have become somewhat of a landmark in England. One might be puzzled by why PETA would need to join this dynamic duo, but apparently 1 bear must be killed for every guard's hat to be made! We can't wait to see what the new outfits will look like...

Shrinkage
Have you noticed the shrinking sizes of popular foods and beverages with no adjustments in price? Tropicana, for example, recently redesigned its large orange juice container, adding an easy pour lid and the space to hold 89 ounces, as opposed to the 96 ounces it used to hold. The price remains the same. According to industry analysts 30% of all packaged goods, not just food, have had some sort of size reduction.
So, what products have YOU noticed shrinking in size?
